HISTORY:

Early in 1946, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen Vandegrift, decided to establish a living memorial to pay tribute to those Marines who had lost their lives during World War II in the Pacific. It was agreed that the site for such a living memorial was to be in San Francisco. A group of creative Marines advanced the concept to buy a building one block off Union Square. It took months of planning, but finally a financially sound solution was reached. On 10 November 1946, the Marine Corps Birthday, the Marines' Memorial Club opened its doors and began its illustrious history.

MARINES' MEMORIAL MISSION

“Maintain a Living Memorial honoring Marines and other Veterans of the United States Armed Forces, including Regular and Reserve Components, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Merchant Marine, and their reserves; to educate and perpetuate the achievements and the sacrifices of these Veterans, and to aid and assist these Veterans.”

MONDAY, APRIL 19. 2010, Harding Park, Ranked in the top 50, 7TH in CA, #2 Best Municipal Course in America. http://www.harding-park.com

2008  Group Prices for Green fees and Carts = $123.00

Situated on a gently rolling peninsula surrounded by the shores of Lake Merced in San Francisco’s southwestern corner, Harding Park Golf Course has reclaimed its stature as one of the great public golfing experiences in the United States. Beginning in the spring of 2002, an extensive improvement process was undertaken to restore Harding’s famed layout to world-class standards.

Harding’s restoration has been a continuing focus of golf industry attention, and the improvements were completed on the basis of returning a PGA Tour event to its storied grounds. Harding Park recently played host to the 2005 World Golf Championship. The event, contested during the dates of October 6 – 9, 2005, featured Tiger Woods defeating John Daly on the second playoff hole to capture the Championship title. For Woods, it marks his sixth TOUR victory of 2005. Proceeds from the event benefited the First Tee Chapter of San Francisco, a non-profit organization that provides inner-city youth the opportunity to learn the game of golf and life skills through its educational program.

Harding Park’s new clubhouse opened to the public in July 2005. The Clubhouse has a full service golf shop, restaurant, and banquet facilities; and is available for weddings and special events.

TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 2010, Crystal Springs Golf Course

http://www.playcrystalsprings.com/

2008  Group Prices for Green fees and Carts = $59.00

The Course…..

Crystal Springs Golf Course, situated along the Buri Buri Ridge of the old San Mateo Rancho, is graced with breathtaking vistas of the 20-mile long Crystal Springs Reservoir. This championship eighteen hole course, conveniently accessible just off Interstate 280 at Hillsborough, is part of the 32,000 acre Crystal Springs Watershed, which has the rare status of a United Nations-designed International Biosphere Reserve.

Originally designed in the 1920’s as an exclusive private club by the noted British architect Herbert Fowler, whose credits include Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s (a permanent member of the British Open rotation).

At 6515 yards, par 72, this is a true championship test with a slope rating of 124 from the back tees.  However, from the middle and forward tees, Crystal is manageable and enjoyable for all skill levels, presenting well-bunkered greens and a diverse strategic palette of golf holes.  A round at Crystal Springs is a feast for the senses with the chirping and calls of the nearly 70 species of birds, the regular sight of playful fawns and the watchful buck, and the smell of the thick stands of Monterey cypress.  Put the world on hold for a few hours, escape the stress and take your leisure in this remarkable place for classic golf.

The San Francisco Giants' AT&T Park, with its breathtaking views and classic design, received rave reviews throughout the country as one of the smash hits of 2000

There is no better location in Northern California than AT&T Park to bring your family, friends or associates, entertain clients or customers, reward employees, and build teamwork and camaraderie among any group.

Choosing to hold your event at AT&T Park will allow your group to experience a wealth of thrilling, memorable and historical moments, in the magnificence of the nation's most beautiful ballpark -- and YOU can make it happen.

The first privately financed ballpark in Major League Baseball since Dodger Stadium (1962), the Giants' new home features an inspiring nine-foot statue of America's greatest living ballplayer, Willie Mays, at the public entrance; Portuguese water dogs who fetch home runs that splash into McCovey Cove (named after another Hall of Fame Willie); an 80-foot Coca-Cola bottle with playground slides and miniature AT&T Park behind left field that has become a magnet for kids of all of ages; and mass public transit that rivals any sports complex in the world.

Columnist Peter Gammons wrote: "It's hard to say what's best about [SBC] Park, except that it is San Francisco. The view from the worst seats in the house still gives you a view of the Bay Bridge and the marina. As great as Camden Yards, Turner Field, The Jake and Coors Field are, this is the best fan's ballpark because it was conceived, built and paid for by Giants owner Peter Magowan, a legitimate baseball fan."

Field Dimensions
Left Foul Line: 339 Feet, Right Foul Line: 309 Feet, Center Field: 399 Feet
Left-Center Field Alley: 364 Feet, Right-Center Field Alley: 421 Feet

Seating Capacity: 41,503

Surface: Kentucky Bluegrass Blend with crushed volcanic rock infield and rubberized tartan-surface warning track.

Outfield Fences: 8 feet high from left field to center with 19-foot span that reaches 11 feet high at its peak in left field; 25 feet high in right field.

Distance from Stands to Home Plate: At a distance of just 48 feet from the first row of seats to homeplate, these lucky fans are actually 12 feet closer to the batter than is the pitcher.

Opening Date: April 11, 2000

Design: Classic urban ballpark with an old-time feel and all the amenities of modern ballparks. Inspired by Wrigley Field and Fenway Park and modeled after Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Jacobs Field and Coors Field.

Alcatraz Island.

Alcatraz Island is a 25-acre island located just 1 1/4-miles from San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. Alcatraz is best known as the infamous and notorious former federal prison - home to the likes of Al Capone, George "Machine Gun" Kelley, and Robert "The Birdman" Stroud. From 1933 to 1963, the Federal Bureau of Prisons used the facility as a maximum security prison. It was closed in 1963 due to its expense. Today Alcatraz swarms with tourists -- about a million a year.

Your trip to Alcatraz departs on a ferry from the dock at Fisherman's Wharf. The ferry across the San Francisco Bay takes about 10 minutes.

To reach the Cell House, you walk from the wharf up the steep hill on the old service road. The Cell House is at the top of the island. Along the way, you can stop and visit exhibits, see a variety of buildings that were used for various prison uses, and enjoy the views. Access: SEAT (Sustainable Easy Access Transport), is available for wheelchair users and visitors with a mobility need who are unable to walk up the quarter mile, 12% grade hill. Another option is to walk along the Agave Trail. The trail begins near the ferryboat landing on the east side of Alcatraz Island and continues to the southern tip of the island. The Agave Trail passes through a protected bird sanctuary and features beautiful plants and flowers. This trail offers fabulous views of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.

The 35-minute audio headset tour of the Alcatraz cell block is a real highlight (for those who purchase the ticket that includes the Audio Tour). This tour is available in six languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. During the tour, you will hear stories from former inmates and prison guards as you walk through the cellblock. After the Cell Block tour, there is time to see all the sites around the island and visit the Alcatraz museum and bookshop.

Ferries depart approximately every half-hour back to San Francisco. You are free to stay as long as you like. Average time spent is 2 to 2 1/2-hours.

FiLoLi.  www.filoli.org

Located thirty miles south of San Francisco on the eastern slope of the Coast Range, the 654-acre Filoli estate contains as its central portion a historic house and sixteen acres of formal garden. The house was occupied from 1917 to 1936 as a private residence for its original owners, William Bowers Bourn II and his wife, Agnes Moody Bourn. In 1937 the property was sold to Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, who continued to maintain and enrich the estate. Mrs. Roth donated Filoli to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1975.

Filoli was built for Mr. and Mrs. Bourn, prominent San Franciscans whose chief source of wealth was the Empire Mine, a hard-rock gold mine in Grass Valley, California. Mr. Bourn was also owner and president of the Spring Valley Water Company comprising Crystal Springs Lake and surrounding lands, which are now part of the San Francisco Water Department. Mr. Bourn selected the southern end of Crystal Springs Lake as the site for his estate. He arrived at the unusual name Filoli by combining the first two letters from the key words of his credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

Mr. Bourn chose his longtime friend, the prominent San Francisco architect Willis Polk, as the principal designer for the house. Polk had previously designed the Bourns’ cottage in Grass Valley, as well as their home on Webster Street in San Francisco. An inventive architect, Polk frequently combined several styles in the design of a single building, an eclecticism clearly evident in Filoli’s design.

Construction of Filoli began in 1915 and the Bourns moved into the house in 1917. Bruce Porter was enlisted to help the Bourns plan the layout of the extensive formal garden, which was built between 1917 and 1921. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bourn died in 1936. The estate was then purchased in 1937 by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Roth, who owned the Matson Navigation Company. Under the Roths’ supervision, the property was maintained and the formal garden gained worldwide recognition. Mrs. Roth made this her home until 1975 when she donated 125 acres, which included the house and formal garden, to the National Trust for Historic Preservation for the enjoyment and inspiration of future generations. The remaining acreage was given to Filoli Center.

A prime example of the California eclectic style, Filoli provides an inspiring vision of a new Eden, with bountiful land, plentiful resources, and an emphasis on self-sufficiency. Built more than sixty years after the California Gold Rush that inspired massive migration to Northern California, and ten years after the devastating 1906 earthquake and fire in San Francisco, Filoli represented a desire to create a magnificent and enduring country estate.

Now operated by Filoli Center, the estate represents an excellent example of architecture and garden design from the first part of the twentieth century. The house is furnished with some of the Bourns’ and Roths’ original furnishings, the Martin collection, and other pieces. During the blooming season, exquisite specimens of Mrs. Roth’s collection of orchids are displayed in the rooms. The beautiful flower arrangements throughout the house are created with flowers from the Lurline B. Roth Garden by the Friends of Filoli Flower Arranging Committee.
